GOING TO PARIS

HON. P. C. WEBB

I.LO. CONFERENCE

After a long absence from Ministerial duties through illness, including a period in hospital in Wellington and Christchurch, the Minister of Labour and Mines (Mr. Webb) is resuming official activities as indicated by an announcement today that he will be one of the Government representatives at the International Labour Organisation conference in Paris in October. The conference is representative of Governments, of workers, and of employers.

The personnel of the New Zealand delegation to the conference, which will open on October 15, was announced today by the Acting Minister of Labour (Mr. O'Brien). Mr. O'Brien said that, apart from Mr. Webb, other Government representatives to the conference would be Mr. Henry E. Moston, C.8.E., Secretary of the Department1 of Labour, with Mr. R. E. Kemp, private secretary to the Minister of Labour, as adviser. The workers of New Zealand would be represented by Mr. P. M. Butler, secretary of the Wellington General Labourers' Union, and the employers by Mr. Val Duff, of New Plymouth, secretary of the Taranaki Employers' Association. Mr. O'Brien expressed pleasure that Mr. Webb's health had improved sufficiently for him to make the journey. "Set up under the Treaty of Versailles, the organisation seeks to define aims for the legislatures of the world," said Mr. O'Brien. "The conferences have dealt with such matters as prevention of unemployment, organisation of vocational and technical education, protective measures in the matter of industrial accident and disease, and the regulation of employment coilfiitions, etc. "Special subjects to be considered this year are the maintenance of high levels of employment during the period of industrial rehabilitation and reconversion, and the welfare of women and young workers. The first of these subjects will be recognised as a topic of vital importance to the economic and social well being of the world." The meeting in Paris will be the twenty-seventh session of the conference of the 1.L.0.
