BLIND PEOPLE CELEBRATE
Blind people in Wellington recently gathered to celebrate the Allied victory with a five-to-seven buffet tea, followed by a social evening at the Social Club for the Blind in Dixon SLreet. Mrs. Knox Gilmer, president of the club, in welcoming the Mayor (Mr. Appleton) and a large gathering of members and friends, outlined the activities of the blind during the war years. In reply, Mr. Appleton congratulated the committee on their fine work for the blind and expressed his. good wishes for the future. Soldiers blinded in this war,.by making use of this club, he said, would be assured of a helpful interest in establishing contact with their fellowmen. The chairman. Mr. F. Carnegie, thanked Mr. Appleton for his continued interest in the club's welfare and also the considerations extended by his council to the blind people. Music and dancing were the principal features of the evening. A piano duet was given by two members, Messrs. Stewart Gordon and Julian Lee, both 'gold medallists, followed by piano-accordion solos by Stewart Gordon, accompanied by Robbie Martin. Community singing was led by Wally Hayes, a member of the club. Items given by an instrumental quartet, Messrs. R. Martin (piano), S. Gordon (saxophone), J. Lee (trumpet), and Mrs. R. Martin (violin), were specially enjoyed. Songs were sung by Miss Kathleen Fuller, .accompanied by Julian Lee. Mr. Wally Hayes thanked the artists on behalf of the members for a delightful entertainment. Special thanks were also expressed to Mrs. Weeds for the beautifully decorated hall, also to the Londoners' League for the photographs and bunting. Supper was served by Mrs. Vrede and helpers.
