CAUSE OF BROKEN HOMES

BAD HOUSING CONDITIONS That the bad housing conditions existing at present are the cause of many broken marriages, with ensuing unhappiness for the children, was the view expressed at a recent meeting in Wellington of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, while the housing improvement Bill recently before Parliament was being discussed. Concern was felt at the lack of a waiting-room for women at the Domestic Proceedings Court, but a deputation from the society to the Justice. Department was advised that until newer buildings replace those at present used, the^ existing state of affairs could not be altered. In , a discussion on painless childbirth', it was moved that the treatment for such childbirth be made available at all maternity hospitals for all women. iThe nembutal-hyoscine j technique, which had proved successful, or any later discoveries, should be recommended. The recent death of a woman in hospital by use of chloroform should make such a practice desirable. Mrs. G. Albert presided at the meet-, ing. Thanks were expressed to the Government for a grant of £100 and the following subscribers:—Lady McGavin, £3 3s; Lady Myers, £1 Is; Mrs. C. M. Turrell, £2 2s; Mrs. John O'Shea, £1 Is; Mrs. W. H. Gledhill, £1 Is; Messrs. Wright. Stephenson, £1 Is; Mrs. Sleeman, 10s; Mrs. Sired, 10s.
