WORK RESUMES FRIDAY
In accordance with the Prime Minister's announcement on Monday, said Mr. W. J. Mountjoy, secretary of the Employers' Association, businesses are observing a holiday as from noon today as the first VJ Day, and tomorrow will also be a close holiday. Normal work and trading will therefore resume on Friday morning. Cuba Street and the effect on the crowds was instantaneous. They cheered and sang and fell in behind the band throwing confetti over the players and themselves. At the corner of Manners and Cuba Streets, "Roll Out the Barrel," . "Tipperary," and other popular war songs were sung with great gusto by the happy throngs. On one building placards bearing such titles as "Stalingrad," "Greece," "Guadalcanal," and "Tokio," milestones in the war, were displayed prominently, and pictures of the great war leaders appeared all over the city. Outside Hope Gibbons Building loud speakers were immediately installed, and Mr. Attlee's broadcast and news received from London were broadcast. To the announcer's query "What do you think of the news?" the general reply was: "It's wonderful news," while a recently-returned soldier from the Middle East said: "This is what we've been waiting for."
