14 DAYS FOR THEFT

Patrick John Harnett, wharf labourer, 28 was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment by Mr. J. L. Stout S.M in the Magistrate's Court today for the theft of a hat valued at £1, part of cargo on the Holmglen which had been pillaged. Harnett pleaded not guilty and evidence was given by Angus Kennedy, chief officer of the ship, that while on deck on Friday afternoon he saw the accused come out of the hold. He was wearing a hat, and when about halfway out of the hold went back down below. The officer followed him down and saw him pushing a hat in among some cartons. The officer investigated and found that a carton of hats had been broken open. ~,,,, , , The accused denied that he had taken the hat, and evidence was given by four other men working on the ship that day that they did not seethe accused wearing a.hat at any time.
