VICTORIA CROSS

AWARDED TO CORPORAL

Rec. 1.30 p.m. RUGBY, July 13. The Victoria Cross has been awarded to Corporal Edward Thomas Chapman, of the Monmouthshire Regiment, for his part in securing the capture of a great ridge which dominates the Westphalian Plain and the DortmundEms Canal near Rheine.

The citation says that Corporal Chapman displayed outstanding * gallantry and superb courage. Single-handed, he repulsed attacks of well-led and determined troops, and gave his battalion time to reorganise on a vital, piece of ground overlooking the only bridge across the canal.

His magnificent bravery played a very large part in the capture of a vital ridge and the successful development of the subsequent operations.
