ALMOST CLEARED
GERMANS IN CRETE
Rec. 12.40 p.m. ATHENS, July 8. Brigadier Preston, commander of the British troops in Crete, disclosed in a speech at Canea that Crete has been finally cleared of Germans, except for a few technicians who are clearing mines and sorting out war materials. Brigadier Preston acknowledged the restraint of the islanders during the period when the Germans, after the surrender, were permitted to carry arms to protect important war material. »
