LABOUR CAUCUS
A caucus of the Parliamentary Labour Party was held today. The Acting Prime Minister (Mr. Nash) preS1 Resolutions- were passed expressing sympathy with Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, M P for Waitomo, in the death of his wife: with Mr. P. Neilson, M.P. for Dunedin Central, in the death of his wife; with Mrs. Munro in the death of her husband (Mr. J. W. Munro, M.P..for Dunedin North), and with Mrs. Findlay in the death of Mr. F. Fmdlay, who was M.P. for Hamilton. Reference was also made to Government members at present on the sick list—the Hon. P. C Webb (Minister of Mines), Messrs. R. Coulter (Raglan), C. H. Chapman (Wellington North), and T. P. Paikea (Northern Maori). Good wishes were extended to them and the hope expressed that they would soon recover their health and be back again in their places in the House. Mr. Nash also stated that caucus expressed pride in the great work done by the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) at the United Nations Conference at San Francisco on behalf of all peace-loving nations and in particular as representative of New Zealand. A resolution embodying these sentiments was adopted. _ - _ — _ o—-— __ —^_ PRISONERS SENTENCED Four youths who appeared together for sentence in the Supreme Court today were dealt with by Mr. Justice Johnston. Ronald James Reid butcher, 19 (Mr. R. L. A. Cresswell), and Leonard John Sheed, factory hand and Bircraftman, 19 (Mr. A. J. Mazengarb), who had pleaded guilty to four charges of breaking and entering and theft, were placed on probation for two years. David "Warren HodgkmB on, labourer, 20 (two charges of breaking and entering and theft), and Raymond Douglas Johnston, labourer, 18 (one charge), were sentenced to two and a quarter years' Borstal detention, to be concurrent with a similar sentence imposed this month. Robert Neil Kiene, shop assistant, who- had pleaded guilty to three charges of stealing money and who was on two years' probation for other offences, was released in the 'terms* of that probationary order. The three offences were committed when he was 16. ' Mr. W. R. Birks appeared for the Crown. ' KING HAAKON'S ESCAPE Rec. 1 p.m. LONDON, June 25. It was revealed that home-made hand grenades were found in a hotel room overlooking a street through which King Haakon was to pass on the day. he returned to Norway, says the Oslo correspondent of the "Daily Express." The room had been occupied by men who have since been arrested and who are suspected of belonging to Quisling's Party.—P.A. cable. ' DIVIDENDS PROPOSED. The directors of Caro's Great Bargain Stores, JWct., will recommend to shareholders at the annual meeting on July 24 a dividend of HVz per cent., less social security and national security taxes, on preference • shares, and 5Ys $er cent., free of tax, on ordinary shares.
