GREAT VALUE TO AIR FORCE Rec. 1.15 p.m. NEW YORK, June 24. The 21st Bomber Command announced that 851 Super-Fortresses, carrying" crews totalling' almost 10,000 trained men, made emergency landings on Iwo Jima from March 4 to June 4, says the Associated Press correspondent on Guam. It is impossible to estimate the exact number of lives and planes saved by the American possession of Iwo Jima. Without the island, the American losses would certainly have increased, and to* avoid ditching hundreds of planes' would have been forced to turn back before reaching their targets. A spokesman said the capture of Iwo Jima had eliminated a base from which the Japanese could attack the Marianas, made fighter escort possible, permitted more efficient weather forecasts, and substantially reduced
