ON LOWER SITTANG
JAPANESE GIVE FIGHT
LONDON, June 24.
A news agency correspondent at South-East Command headquarters reports increased Japanese activity north-east of Rangoon. He says that about 7000 Japanese, dug in on the east bank of the lower Sittang River, have increased their shelling of our positions across the river. During the night a patrol of about 40 Japanese attacked our positions at the western end of the wrecked Sittang bridge. The attack had no effect on our defences and the Japanese withdrew, leaving casualties.
