WAGE INCREASE

HOTEL WORKERS

Awards have been issued by the Court of Arbitration raising employees' wages in licensed and private hotels in the Northern, Taranaki, Wellington, Marlborough, Nelson, Westland. Canterbury, and Otago and Southland industrial districts. The wages provisions of the award governing licensed hotels are retrospective to February 12 last for some increases and to April 1 for others. For the period February 12 to March 31, 1945, the minimum male weekly rates have, in general, been increased by 5s 3d a week; but in some cases, such as third and fourth cooks, porters, general hands, pantrymen, laundrymen, arid other male domestics, the increase ranges from 7s 6d to 10s a week. Similarly, during the same period the rates for female weekly workers have been increased by 2s 6d a week, except in the case of barmaids, where the increase is 5s 3d a week. On and after April 1 last, all minimum weekly rates are further, increased by an additional 4s 9d a week in the case of males and 7s 6d in the case of females. This makes a total increase on the previous minimum rates of not less than 10s a week for both male and female weekly workers. Where board is not provided a worker is to receive an additional £1 a week, and where lodging is not provided an additional 10s a week. The new wage rates are subject to the two cost-of-living bonuses of the Court. Certain alterations have been made to the provisions enabling an employer to require workers to Work on their usual weekly days off. Hours of work remain the same, 40 per week, to be worked on 5i days each week, but where practicable a week's work shall be performed within five days of the week. Payment for overtime is to be made on the pay .day for the week in which overtime is worked. Alterations similar to those in the New Zealand Licensed Hotel Workers' Award are contained in the New Zealand Private Hotel Employees' Award. From February 12 to March 31, 1945, the minimum male weekly rates have been increased by 5s 3d a week, but in some cases, such as third cooks, kitchen hands, waiters, porters, general hands, pantrymen, and other male domestics, the increase ranges from 3s to 13s a week. Weekly rates for females during the same period have been increased by 2s 6d a week. From April 1 all minimum weekly rates are further increased by an additional 5s 9d a week in the case of males, and 8s 6d a week in the case of females. The total increase is not less than 11s a week for both male and female workers. Hours of work are 44 a week, to be worked on 5J days of the week.
