AUSTRALIAN PUBLIC DEBT

CANBERRA, June 22.

Australia's total public debt stands at about £2,589,000,000, or more than £354 per head of population. The interest payable totals £74,300,000, or more than 3 per cent.

These figures, released today by the Commonwealth Statistician, Mr. S. R. Carver, compare with Great Britain's national debt of £22,389,000,000 with its interest and , management charges of £415.000,000, or 1.85 per cent. State debts make up about £900,000,000 of the Australian total. .;. ,

Savings bank deposits here have now reached the record figure of £540,000,000, which is £94,000,000 more than at the. corresponding time last year, and £303,000,000 more than in 1940.
