MR. LEO C. ROTHSCHILD
The death took place yesterday at his home in Kelburn Parade of Mr. Leo Cecil Rothschild, aged 56, managing director of the wholesale jewellery firm of I. J. Rothschild and Co., Ltd., and a' well-known member of the Wellington business community. Though he had been ill for some weeks, Mr. Rothschild was making what was believed to be a good recovery when he collapsed last evening. Mr. Rothschild was twice married; his first wife was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Mandel, of Wellington. He is survived by his
Wife, formerly Miss Etta .Field, the well-known Auckland singer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I. Schneideman, two children of the first marriage, Mr. Ken Rothschild and Miss June Rothschild, of Wellington, and also by two sisters, Mrs. F. H. Pope, of Wellington, and Mrs. B. J. Jacobs, of Melbourne.
An old boy of Wellington College, Mr. Rothschild was the son of Mr. I. J. Rothschild, who died in Wellington in 1941, aged 93, after being a resident of the 'Dominion for more than 70 years. His father arrived on the West Coast in 1867, and participated in the gold rush there. He returned to England, but in 1878 again sailed for New Zealand, where he founded the jewellery firm of Rothschild and Jacobs in Dunedin. After a sojourn in business in Australia, he paid a third visit to New Zealand and joined the firm of Mandel and Harris. Eventually he set up in business for himself, and in 1918 Mr. Leo Rothschild (who had served overseas for four years with the First N.Z.E.F.) joined his father in partnership. On his father's death the latter became managing director of the firm.
Mr. L. C. Rothschild was a Justice of the Peace, a member of the R.S.A., of the Wellington Lodge, and of the Central and C.T.A. Clubs. He was for years a keen fisherman, and was well known in the Taupo district.
