BANK OFFICERS' GUILD
The annual conference of the New Zealand Bank Officers' Guild, which was attended by delegates from all parts of the Dominion, concluded in Wellington last Friday. The annual report showed that the membership had reached 3579, which represented almost 100 per cent, of the staffs of the trading banks. Out of a total prewar membership of 3300, 1526 had joined the Armed Forces, said the report. Of these 127 members had given their lives, 128 had been wounded, and 56 had been decorated or mentioned in dispatches. The guild had kept in touch with all its members, including those who had been prisoners of war, through the frequent dispatch of newsletters from the guild office. It was reported that to date 264 bank officers had gained the university diploma in banking and a large number had also gained passes in the .security course.
Believed to have been caused by a short circuit in the wiring, a fire" in a car in a garage at Wadestown early this morning caused severe damage to the upholstery and interior. The Fire Brigade was notified and two machines attended, one from the Central Station and one from Thorndon. Bucket pumps were used to extinguish the blaze.
