BROADER DEMOCRACY IN TURKEY

LONDON, June 9. Reuters correspondent in Istanbul says that for the first time since its establishment, the Turkish Republican People's Party—the sole political party in Turkey—decided not to nominate candidates in the by-elections on June 17 to fill six vacant seats in the National Assembly. The Turkish Press regards the decision as a step towards free elections and a broader democracy.

In 1937 the Grand National Assembly in Ankara agreed to the establishment of the principles of the People's Republican Party—namely, nationalism, democracy, evolutionism (adaptation to circumstances), Mcism (separation of State and religion), and "etatism" (State ownership or control of the principal means of communications, industries, mines, and public utility services)—as part of the Constitution of the Republic. This virtually recognised only one party •in the State and established a form of State Socialism.
