POLICE PROMOTION
Detective N. J. McPhee, of the detective branch, Central Police Station, Wellington, has received notice of oromotion to detective-sergeant. Mr. McPhee has been . stationed in Wellington for the past 18 years. He was a foundation-member of the Police Pipe Band, of which he is pipe major, and has been responsible for the inquiries into a large number of m'ominent cases which have come- before the Wellington Courts in recent years. .
Kenneth Norman Hutchings,, labourer, 18, pleaded guilty before Mr. I T. E. Maunsell, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday to a charge of being idle and disorderly in that he had insufficient lawful means of support. He had not been working and had been warned by the police, it was stated, and had been arrested last Friday, when he was found to have no money. Pie was sentenced to '.wo years' Bors.tal detention. Hutehings also pleaded guilty to four charges laid under the nian-power regulations and was convicted and rliFoharged on each.
