DEATH OF MINTON

FOXIANA SCHOOLS WELL

(Special to "The Post")

PALMERSTON N., This Day.

The steeplechaser Minton died yesterday following paralysis. He was trained by C. Boyle for Mr. T. Coltman, of Wellington. While schooling a maiden horse at Awapuni yesterday. W. J. Stevens was thrown against the running rail when the horse came to grief at the first fence. ' Stevens was sent to hospital, but it is not thought that any bones were broken, though he suffered extensive bruising. One of the feature items at Awapuni this morning was a round over the big fences by Foxiana (C. A. Bcwry) and Taane Pango (A. Midwood). Sedgebrae (Rouse) started off behind them, but ran off at the second of the double. He led the others into the logs and the sod wall, where he came to grief. Foxiana and Taane Pango jumped well, and Foxiana was all right when he pulled up. Red Glare schooled on Thursday, and he worked well over a mile on the flat.

Others to jump hurdles were Sandy Cape (Midwood) and Mary Jo (Carter). They gave a fine display of fast jumping. Phalaria (Bowry). Lady Premier (Fagan) and Royal Regret (Miss White) also jumped well, Phalaria having to be held back to enable the others to be with him at the fences. Rink (A. Waddell), Broiefield (S. Waddell), Hakim (Urwin), and Blanket (A. Bowness)) galloped in a mile in 2.0. They were almost .in line at the finish, with Rink a shade in front. All went well. The flags were wide out and the going greasy after rain.
