MILK FOR HUTT VALLEY

CONSUMERS' ORGANISATION

"Hutt Valley consumers will view with the greatest satisfaction the statement by the general manager of the Wellington Municipal Milk Department that the completion of re-zon-ing of milk rounds in the Valley and the manufacture of more bottle crates would enable his department to supply vendors early in June with sufficient pasteurised milk to serve all residents who desired it. Consumers will now be assured of a safe and reliable supply of excellent quality milk from the most economic concern in the country." said Mr. J. V. Burton, chairman of the Hutt Valley Milk Consumers' Society, today.

A number of problems concerning the milk supply still remained to be solved, and the Consumers' Society was actively dealing with them, said Mr. Burton. >In the near future a Metropolitan Milk Council for the Valley would be set up. Certain proposals concerning representation on this were regarded as undemocratic and quite unsound. There was also the much more important question of assuring a continuation of the supply of pasteurised milk from the Wellington department. There were proposals afoot which, if allowed to materialise, would deprive citizens of this milk.

In creating the new milk organisation for the Valley, the local bodies had an. important part to play. The Consumers' Society was glad to learn that the-Lower Hutt City Council had agreed to receive a deputation, and representatives of the society expected to place proposals before the council at an early date. It was to be deplored, however, that a request for a similar deputation to the Petone Borough Council had been declined. The society was representative of a very large body of consumers, and for a local body which should be sensitive to public opinion to refuse to hear representatives was most undemocratic and serious. The Consumers' Society, however, would take every step to see that the interests of consumers were safeguarded.
