AUSTRALIAN GRATUITIES
Eec. 1.30 p.m. CANBERRA, May 26. ■ The war gratuities and interest paid to servicemen and servicewomen will not be regarded as property or income under the Invalid and Old Age Pensions or Repatriation Acts, it was an.ncunced by Mr. J. B. Chifley when introducing the War Gratuity Bill in the House of Representatives.
The gratuities and interest will be tax free.
Mr. Chifley explained that to prevent the inflation which would result from the sudden release of the £63,000,000 represented by the war gratuities and the £60,000,000 represented by the deferred pay, the gratuity, bearing 3} per" cent, interest, will not be payable for five years, but special provision will "be made for earlier cash payment in certain cases.
