BRAVE INDIAN N.C.O.
AMAZING FEAT THAT WON V.C.
RUGBY, May 24.
The amazing feat of a corporal of the Indian Army is told in the announcement of the award of the fourth Victoria Cross this week. Naik Fazal Din, of the 10th Baluchi Regiment, going to the assistance of a Bren-gunner in Burma on March 2 last, was run through by a Japanese officer's sword, the point appearing through his back. On the officer withdrawing the sword. Fazal Din, despite his terrible wound, tore it from his grasp and killed him with it. He then went to the assistance of a sepoy who ' was struggling with another Japanese, and killed the latter with the sword. He continued to encourage and lead his section, and then staggered to platoon headquarters to make his report, and there collapsed. He died soon after arriving at the regimental aid post. "Such supreme devotion to duty even when fatally wounded, presence of mind, and understanding courage have seldom been equalled, and reflect the unquenchable spirit of this singularly brave and gallant n.c.0.," the citation concludes. This is the twenty-fifth V.C. awarded to- the Indian Army, and the 144 th of the war.—B.O.W. i
