CANADIAN FLAG

MR. MACKENZIE KING'S PROMISE

OTTAWA. May 24. The Prime Minister, Mr. Mackenzie King, in a speech, said that if his Government was returned he would ask Parliament to authorise a distinctive Canadian flag. It would also enact a clear comprehensive definition of what constituted a Canadian citizen. Mr. King said that Canada's development to nationhood had never been a j source of disunity in the Commonwealth. Its reality had long been achieved, but certain outward symbols were lacking, such as a (lag and a clear definition of citizenship. -■ "The time has come for a distinctive flag,'7 he said. "It is all the more important because Canadian troops will be serving with the United States forces in the war against Japan." He added that they would, of course, always honour the Union Jack as the symbol of the British Commonwealth and Empire.
