"THE FOURTH LINE"
The opinion that the Fire Boards' Association was more necessary now than ever before, was expressed by Mr. S. S. Dean at the annual conference of the New Zealand association yesterday, and it was felt by Mm that the reorganisation scheme which would come into being must revolutionise the fire service to a very great extent. Both he and the president, Mr. T. M. Charters, of Christchurch, referred to the important place the service occupied. "In all parts of the world," said Mr. Dean, "the fire service must be taken as the fourth line of service. It must be built up and it must be maintained." It came next to the Navy, Army, and Air Force in war, and in that there was the evidence of its place for all time.
