NEARING JUNCTION
AMERICANS ON MINDANAO, WASHINGTON, May 24, On the high plateau in the interior of Mindanao only eight miles now separates our forces converging from: the north and south, says General MacArthur's communique. Our southern* column, brushing aside enemy^ resistance at Kalaysungay, drove ; 10 miles north of Malaybalay and seized Dalwangan. Our northern spearhead advanced several miles beyond Maluko. The 24th Division in the Davao sec* tor pushed one mile north of Duna- | wan, secured Tanbungen, and closed in: lon Licanan aerodrome. In the Santa Fe area on Luzon, units, of the Ist Corps continued the reduction of isolated enemy strong-points.; Naval patrols bombarded enemy positions on the east coast. Patrols attacked Takeo.and Keelung.. Long-range patrols of the sea blockade force attacked Shanghai and Cantoit and sank a 5000-ton freighter and other S Heavy' bombers struck Brunei town-, ship and Melak aerodrome. Other planes sweeping- Borneo and the; Celebes sank a 3000-ton freighter. Australian troops crossed the Hongo-. rai River on Bougainville in force and! captured strong positions in the vicm-.. ity of Tohu, two miles to the rear of) the enemy's defences guarding the Buinl road. Bombers closely supported and! also made neutralising attacks in thai Rabaul and Wewak areas. , Mopping up continues on Tara-% ■kan.
