ADVANCE OF CHINESE
CHUNGKING, May 23. Chinese troops advanced five miles in Hunan Province and reached a point within 20 miles of Paoking. Other Chinese troops in Kwangsi Province reached Hwaiyuanchen, 45 miles north-west of Liuchow. Reports from Hunan say that the Japanese are seriously weakened by the loss of 17,000 troops during the drive towards Chih-kiang from March 9 to April 9. Rec. 12.15 p.m. CHUNGKING, May 24. The Chinese have routed the Japanese from positions 19 miles west of Paoching and are continuing to advance on the city, says the Chinese High Command. Major fighting is occurring in the vicinity of Taohwaping on the Shaoyang-Chihkiang highway, 25 miles west of Shaoyang, which has been in Chinese hands for over a week.
