And they did. * * * HALT MOB—PASS GUARDS! It was dark on the road to Berlin. Men of a commando unit dug themselves in at the roadside. .There came a rumble of approaching tanks. A commando corporal jumped on to the roadway, brandishing a revolver, and shouted, "Halt! What mob is this?" The turret of a tank, opened and a voice, mingling humour with hauteur, replied: "This is no mob. It is the; Guards." The tanks rolled on. * * * LOVE TRIANGLE. The United States Navy decided to solve a transatlantic love triangle involving a handsome young petty officer, his wife, and a pretty 20-year-old girl in Pozzuoli, Italy. Central figure in the triangle is 21----years-old Chief Pharmacist's Mate Frederick Brooks, of New York. Last year Fabio Scinia, an Italian Government worker, wrote to Mayor La Guardia that Brooks had become engaged to his daughter while at Poz- , zuoli, and had left suddenly, without word. ' Mayor La Guardia forwarded, the letter to Navy Secretary Forrestal, pointing out that the honour of the United States Fleet was involved. Brooks, meanwhile, had returned to the States and married. He is now under arrest, awaiting transportation to Italy to explain to the outraged Scinia; * # * A CAMEO. Saturday evening. I'm off to the pictures tonight, : . The United States army discloses that service troops have already been. shifted to China from the Persian Gulf area, where they helped to supply the Soviet army. A huge truck convoy made a 6000 miles' trek from the Iranian desert to the Kunming supply centre, travelling by sea, rail, and highway. The first leg of the journey from the desert to Calcutta was made bysea. From Calcutta the convoy was •carried by rail to. Ledo, the terminus of the Stilwell Highway. , From there it proceded under its own power over the highway to Kunming. Every vehicle arrived intact. The movement was planned long in advance, even before the Japanese were driven from north Burma, and before the Stilwell Road was opened. The force is already at work transferring munitions and supplies to the Chinese forces.
