50 YEARS A TEACHER

RETIREMENT OF MR. J. K. EDIE Nearly 400 pupils, ex-pupils, ■ and parents attended a farewell /function and1 presentation at the South Wellington School, in honour of Mr. J. K. Edie, who is retiring after 18 years as headmaster. Mr. Edie has the unusual honour of completing 50 years' service as a teacher, and headmaster. Mr. M.. A. H. x Stubbs, chief inspector of schools, Mr. Dyer, chairman of the Education Board, and Mr. H. McFelly, late assistant, master of the school Felicitous speeches were made by Messrs. A. Brigans, inspector of schools, V." W. Colville, recently appointed headmaster of the school, A. F. McMurtrie, Assistant Director of Education, Colonel T..W. McDonald (Education.Board and Parents' Association), Messrs. J. BMton, jun. (combined school committees), L. A. Fielder (teachers' representative), C. F. Lippit (past school committees), and W. J. McKeon, who presented Mr. Edie with a wristlet watch, and a travelling bag, and Mrs. Edie with a handbag; a floral spray was presented to Mrs. Edie earlier in the evening by a pupil. Mr. Edie also received gifts from the staff and teachers. In reply, Mr. Edie, thanking the donors tor the gifts, stressed four main points in education observed at the South Wellington School—friendly greetings, good manners, willingness to serve, and love of school. Items were rendered by the school choir, expupils, and Mr. S. Gibson.
