VICTORY DAY

CLOSING OF SHOPS

The question of providing food supplies for the public on V Day and the succeeding day was mentioned by the Mayor (Mr. Appleton) today. He had discussed the matter with Mr. W. J. Mountjoy, who represented the businesses that would be thus concerned, he said, and Mr. Mountjoy had pointed out to him that essential shops must remain open. It would be yery wrong for all workers to cease work with the needs of people unsatisfied. People required for these essential services should be given time off at a later date, or some consideration instead. Both Mr. Mountjoy and the Mayor today agreed that this was the only reasonable course in view of the existing needs of the public.
