RETURN TO FRANCE
SOUGHT BY PIERRE LAVAL
Rec. 11 a.m.
LONDON, April 29
According to Paris radio, Pierre Laval, Marcel Deat, and Luchaire have asked the Swiss authorities for permission to pass through Switzerland in order to surrender themselves to the French courts.
The Russian Embassy in Paris announced that Edouard Herriot and his wife, who were released last week, are both in good health and spirits.
AUSTRALIAN SHEEP LOSS
CANBERRA, April 28. If the losses of stock due to drought continue on the present scale additional cuts in the Australian civilian meat ration will be inevitable, said the Minister of Commerce, Mr. J. S.. Scully, when commenting on reports that the drought had cost Australia 20,000,000 sheep, or 16 per cent, of its sheep population
Mr. Scully said that even if relief rains fell soon in the drought areas sheep mortality would be high. It would take at least three or four normal seasons for the industry to recover.
offer of surrender was made on April 24 at Friedrichsruhe. Castle, in which the Swedish Legation from Berlin is now housed. Count Bernadotte immediately flew to Sweden, where he made contact with the Swedish Foreign Office, which communicated with the British and American but not with the Russian representatives, in accordance with Himmler's request. Count Bernadotte is now believed to be at Flensburg, on the Danish-German border, where there is a big Red Cross camp, and there is presumably no obstacle to his again meeting Himmler. -
