AMERICANS ON LUZON

WASHINGTON, April 17. The American forces in the northern sector of Luzon are continuing their drive towards Baguio, in the face of a stubborn enemy defence by day and repeated counter-attacks by night, says General Mac Arthur's communique.

The. troops in the central sector are overcoming strong enemy pockets of resistance in the Novaliches-Marikina watershed area.

Bombers and fighters dropped more than 700 tons of bombs, closely supporting the ground forces and guerrillas. ■

The ground forces on Negros and Cebu are steadily eliminating the enemy garrisons.

The neutralisation of the airfields on Formosa was continued a£ strong formations of escorted heavy bombers dropped 111 tons on Toyohara, Kagi, Hainan, and Taichu. They destroyed at least 16 planes and probably destroyed five.
