TRADE TRAINING
PETONE SCHOOL OPENED
Instruction in bricklaying, plaster.ing, and tiling for suitable ex-service-men is provided at the trade training centre ooened at Petone yesterday afternoon by the Minister of Rehabilitation (Mr. Skinner). Already there are over 50 ex-servicemen in training at the school.
The importance of such centres in supplying trained artisans to help overtake the housing shortage was emphasised both by Mr. Skinner and the Minister of Finance (Mr. Nash). Mr. Skinner said it appeared that the old method of training artisans was gone for ever, for it had been demonstrated that the average man could be trained to become a tradesman in far shorter* time than was previously considered necessary. Reference was also made by Mr. Skinner to the heavy demands on the Dominion's timber resources, and he emphasised the necessity for the use of alternative materials in building construction.
The opening ceremony was attended by a number of visitors. The Director of Rehabilitation (Mr. F. Baker) presided.
