HOUSING DEMAND
The New South Wales Government is pushing ahead with its housing scheme. According to the Premier, Mr. McKell, of 25Q0 new homes to be built,during the. present financial-year ending next June, 1700 have either been completed or are under'construction. The year's plans involve an outlay of close on £3,000,000, but this is a mere bagatelle compared with the post-war scheme which, it is estimated, will run into an average expenditure of £20,000,000 for at least ten years. This is essential to catch |up with the State's housing shortage, plus the lag occasioned by the fact that during the war home building has practically ceased. Houses used only for holidays and weekends, of which there are thousands within a 70 miles radius of Sydney, are liable jto be thrown open compulsorily for servicemen under an amendment of the War Service Moratorium Act. If any such homes are reported to be unoccupied during week days the Federal Legal Service Bureau promises to act immediately. Occupancy by serYicemen has already been secured in numerous instances.
