FOUNDER'S DAY

PARADE THROUGH CITY

More than 1500 Boy Scouts and Girl Guides paraded through Wellington streets yesterday afternoon, and later filled the Town Hall at a Founder's Day service, which was attended by the Governor-General and Lady Newall, the Mayor (.Mr. Appleton) and the Mayoress, and prominent leaders of the movement. Brownies and Guides, it was estimated, numbered 700, and, in addition, there were 800 Cubs and Scouts.

The majority of those on parade came from Wellington City and suburbs, though several country troops were represented. The procession of Scouts and Guides, which assembled at the Railway Station, was under the direction of Mr. Downey. It was led by the pipe band of the First Battalion of the Wellington Regiment, and the Scots College Pipe Band. The Town Hall service was conducted by Mr. P. T. Smithers, Wellington County Commissioner. Others on the platform included Mrs. M. G. Turnbull, Wellington Divisional Guide Commissioner, Mrs. Holmes, Provincial Commissioner for Guides, and Mr. W. C. Rodger, Commissioner at Dominion headquarters. In an address to the young people, Mr. Rodger recalled the life work of Lord Baden-Powell, and said that his greatest monuments were the movements that he and his wife had founded. The creed of unselfishness, service, and mutual help that the founder of the Boy Scout movement had preached during his extremely useful career was even more than ever necessary in a war-weary world The climax of the ceremony came when all present, Brownies and Guides, Cubs and Scouts, renewed their pledge to serve the movement.

Mr. Clem. Howe presided at the organ during the service.
