SUCCESS OF PHOENIX

IN PAHIATUA CUP

DAUARROCK THE SPRINT

(Special to "The Post.") ' PALMERSTON N., Feb. 24. The Pahiatua Meeting was held at the Woodville racecourse in bright weather, and the course was in splendid order. The attendance was good, and the totalisator handled £35,950, compared with £41,817 10s last year, which, however, was the best aggregate for many years. There was a blanket finish to the Highweight Handicap, and Te Ranui, sticking on much better than he did the previous week, won well by a neck from Severity, who finished brilliantly to cut Master Gary back into third place. Master Gary set the pace to the straight, where Te Ranui ran up to him. Pompit and St. Lucien joined issue half a furlong later, and they were fighting it out when Severity swept up on the outer.

Silver Note, who had finished a good third to Dileas and Lady Nahleen at the Woodville Meeting, was first to break the line in the Konini Hack Handicap, and he stayed in front to the finish. Tid-Apa, Gay Lena, and Tifox attended him at the home turn, but Silver Note was never in danger and won decisively by over two lengths from Gay Lena, with Tid-Apa a similar distance away third. Tifox was fourth.

There was a thrilling finish to the Juvenile Race, and the judge could not separate Specialist and Dutch Mary, and Gyration was only half a length away from the dead-heaters. Dutch Mary, however, moved out in the straight, taking Specialist off his true course, and after a long-drawn-out inquiry Specialist was awarded the race and Dutch Mary relegated to second place. Kashmiri was a fair fourth W L. Aitken, the rider of Dutch Mary was stood down for one month

Phoenix scored decisively in the Fahiatua Cup after having acted as copacemaker with Lowry Bay right to the straight. There was little pace on early but it quickened with six turlongs to go, where Come True moved forward. The two leaders came across the top together, being followed by Come True, Financial Queen's Charm, and Sovereign Lad, but on reaching the straight Phoenix went into the lead. Thereafter, he was never seriously challenged, and he won as he liked by three lengths from Lowry Bay, who was a neck in front of yueen s Charm, with Broiveine coming on for fourth after being at the rear with three furlongs to go. The payout was held up, the rider of Lowry Bay having intimated his intention to lodge a protest. However, the rider did not proceed with the lodging of the protest, but further time was lost. The Maiden Race was run in divisions, and they provided blanket finishes. The first division was won £y.pay Corrie from Tribal Night and Patta Fe, who crossed the line on : erms; ~? atta Fe looked likely at the top of the straight, but weakened. In the second division Lady Chips came through along the inner, to overhaul Happy Climax, with Gay Witch a creditable third. Both winners are trained by T. L. Jennings at Opaki. The finish m the open sprint provided the high light of the day's racing It was one of the best in years Daljarrock scoring by a neck from Theiolyn, with Royal Greek only half a head away.
