NO NIGHT SHIFT

THREE BOATS AFFECTED

P.A. AUCKLAND, February 23. A fairly large ship and a smaller Union Steam Ship Company - vessel were idle tonight, the Auckland Waterside ' Workers' Union having maintained its decision not to work night shifts on Union Company vessels. The company is acting as agent for the larger ship. These are the first vessels to be affected by the night shift dispute, which arose on February 4 when the union claimed that the company had employed non-union labour while union members were available. "The Union Company put in a requisition for night gangs for the ships and when the matter was referred to the union it was stated that its previous decision still stood," said the Auckland Waterfront Controller, Mr. W. J. Cuthbert. "It was then decided not to call for labour." If the union maintains its attitude there will be no night shifts on the Union Company's Kaimiro, which is due on Sunday with coal from Grevmouth. J
