FINED FOR BOOKMAKING

While passing through the private bar of a city hotel yesterday afternoon Sergeant Le Fort and Constable E. T. Kingsbeer saw Alexander Greenfield, barman, 51, writing something in a notebook and a man standing next to him studying a doubles chart. The sergeant took possession of the notebook, which showed that 28 bets had been taken, and later Greenfield offered to make a voluntary appearance before the Court. .

Today Sub-Inspector Mclntyre gave those facts when Greenfield appeared before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., and pleaded guilty to a charge of bookmaking. His counsel, Mi G. Joseph, said that Greenfield had been convicted last year for bookmaking and had given it up, but he had found difficulty in getting away from his previous clients. Yesterday was the first day he had resumed.

The Magistrate imposed a fine of £75.
