MISHAP IN FOG
ROLLING STOCK DAMAGED
P.A. WANGANUI, This Day. Bound for Wanganui from Aramoho Junction, a mixed train scheduled to travel to Palmerston North, swung on to a branch line outside Aramoho Station at approximately 6.30 a.m. today and ran head-on into a stationary goods train which had been engaged in shunting.
The accident occurred in a heavy fog.
The fireman of the mixed train received facial cuts, but otherwise no injuries were suffered by the crews. Three loaded trucks immediately behind the tender of the KA class locomotive from Wanganui were partially crushed and thrown off the track in the centre of a level crossing, while both the AB engine and its tender and the guard's van behind it on the stationary train were extensively damaged.
The collision blocked the line between Wanganui and Aramoho, and also the branch route immediately on to the river bridge at the south of the station.
The Aramoho yards are left full of goods vans and wagons, and mixed and goods services from both north and south are delayed. It was almost midday before the main line into Aramoho Station was cleared.
The damaged wagons, vans, and locomotives were removed to the Eastown Workshops for repairs.
