American Fifth Army troops in Italy have broken through elaborate German trench systems on the Apennine mountain peaks overlooking the watering place of Porretta. 28 miles southwest of Bologna, on the Postoia-Bo-logna road, state agency correspondents. The clearing of the Apennine peaks and the upper Reno Valley deprives the Germans of observation points.—
Reuters correspondent expresses the opinion that this success will facilitate Allied traffic through the valley. The Exchange Telegraph agency's correspondent reports that the Germans have persisted in counter-attacks against heights which were captured by Americans and Brazilians, but that all the attacks were beaten off, the ground held, and the positions consolidated.
