EDUCATION WELFARE
P.A. NELSON, February 23. Addressing a meeting at Takaka, the Minister of Education (Mr. Mason) said he hoped very shortly to achieve a definite result in reducing the number of pupils a teacher in primary schools. This was a matter that 'had been long discussed by the New Zealand Educatioh Institute and others interested in primary education. Essential steps towards the achievement of this ideal had been taken by his predecessor (Mr. Fraser) by expanding the building programme. In spite of the war, Mr. Mason believed it would be. possible to institute reform in some instances. Changes which he hoped to make might to a large extent remain nominal while so many teachers were with the Armed Forces, but would be transferred from nominal to reality in progressive stages as the teachers returned.
