LABOUR COLLEGE

OPENED IN SYDNEY

SYDNEY, February 5. The Henry Lawson Labour College, the aims of which are to equip young people to assume office in their unions and to raise the educational standard of men and women entering politics imder the Labour banner, was opened •here yesterday by the Deputy Prime Minister (Mr. Forde)

*uA steady flow of young people into the Labour movement was vital to its existence as a vigorous political party said Mr. Forde. Without tteni the party' would stagnate. Among the subjects which the college would teach were English, journalism, public speaking economics, the theory of practical bocialism, the history and organisation of the Australian Labour Party and trades unions, Arbitration Court procedure,- and the history, structure, and methods of Australian government. Mr F°rde also suggested that the college should promote the study of international affairs and of Labour organisations abroad.

Mrs. Bertha Lawson, widow of the famous Australian poet after whom the college is named, said she was sure the foundation of the college commemorated the achievements \of her ■husband in a way he would have ap'?^v:? d- * as a ,great man- an<* the spirit of Orpheus had permeated his writing. He had foretold in verse what would happen in Australia in these last critical years. Much as he had loved Australia, he had loved its people more.
