FEEDING THE PEOPLE

100,000 MEALS IN A DAY

LONDON, December 22. A communique from Lieut-General Scobie today reports further British success in the clearing of Athens and the Piraeus. More than 100,000 meals were served yesterday to the civilians in the controlled zones.

In the areas cleared of the ELAS forces the civilians have received the British troops with enthusiasm, the communique adds. A large delegation headed by the Mayor of the Piraeus visited the British authorities and tendered thanks.

Rocket-firing Beaufighters blasted the ELAS positions at- the Averoff political prison, and paratroopers and tanks attacked an SLAS 75mm. gun beyond Omonia Square.

The fighting otherwise has died down, the situation being quieter than since the opening clash, says a British United Press correspondent. The Allied authorities continued the distribution of food while British troops cleared .street after street practically without .opposition. Elasites in some parts of Athens are reported to be using hand microphones and amplifiers, calling on their supporters to continue the resistance for a little longer as a solution is being reached. This report suggests that the Elasites are tiring of the struggle. The 6500 Greeks who have now joined the National Guard in Athens are under the Greek Government, but are being clothed and fed by the British.
