HUTT VALLEY R.S.A.

PREMISES APPEAL

The executive of the Hutt Valley R.S.A. publicity committee has made the following statement regarding the article which appeared in "The Post" last night, which quoted Mr. Green, Mayor of Petone, as saying that he did not agree to accept office as trustee of the proposed memorial. j "The position is that in setting up the! personnel of the Memorial Trust it was I unanimously agreed by the Hutt Valley Returned Soldiers' Association executive that the Mayor of Lower Hutt and the Mayor of Petone in perpetuity should be members of that trust, in view of the fact that the trust was formed to safeguard the interests of the community as a whole and that these two men were the chosen leaders of their respective communities. "Mr. Green, as Mayor of Petone, was notified by telephone immediately after the meeting that he had been appointed a trustee. Mr. Green felt that in view of his council's opinion, and the fact that Petone was endeavouring to build a memorial hall of its own, he could not accept the trusteeship. It was, however, pointed out to Mr. Green that his appointment as a trustee did not necessarily mean that he or his council had to sponsor our campaign, that he was appointed in his official capacity as Mayor of Petone in order to safeguard public interests. On that understanding Mr. Green agreed to accept the appointment and our campaign was launched."
