LADIES' MILITARY BAND

A concert was held in the Red Cross .Hall, Lower Hutt, recently, in aid of the Hutt Valley Ladies' Military Band funds. Miss Jean Curtis, a Wellington performer, and Miss- Julie Tunpirj, Lower Hutt dancer, took part, and the remainder of the concert was given by the members of the band. There was a cornet solo by Miss Margaret Soulsby, a cornet and euphonium duet by Mesdames Hoare and Anderson, dancing by Miss June Alexander, and a clarinet trio by Misses M. Clark, L. Geddes, and Mr., W. E. Currie, with Miss M. Hillar at the piano.

The band, conducted by Mr. J. McGrath, played several numbers, surprising many who did not expect such a good performance from girls, especially as they had been learning only about three months.. The drum corps also played drum marches.. Bright choruses were a feature of the evening, and a mouth-organ band, accompanied by Miss Mavis Clark on the banjo, played for some of the novelty numbers. Mr. S. Woods was accompanist for* the concert, and later played for the dancing.

Among those present were Mr. J. W. Andrews, Mr. T. Gray (conductor Civic Band)/Mr. Smith (conductor of ■. the Municipal Band), and representatives of 'the Hutt Valley Pipe Band. .

Another^ successful variety concert, organised and presented by the Wellington committee of the . band,: was held in the Parish Hall;. Karori, recently, in aid of funds; The organiser was Miss Mavis Clark, and Miss Audrey Mills was general manager. Mr. W. E..
