SEAMAN CONVICTED

WANTED TO SEE CHILD

"This man was previously convicted of a bigamous marriage with the young woman who lives with her infant child in these premises, and since he has been released there have been several complaints of him hanging about there," said Sub-Inspector J. Mcintyre in the Magistrate's Court today, when he pi'osecuted James Kelly, labourer and seaman, aged 30, on a charge of being found unlawfully on enclosed premises in circumstances which did not reveal the commission or intent to commit any other crime. Kelly pleaded guilty and was convicted by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., who ordered him to come up for sentence if called on within 12 months.

Sub-Inspector Mcintyre said that Kelly's object was to see his child, the result of the. bigamous union, but that the young woman concerned did not want anything further,to do with him. "I undersand that he has even gone so far as to threaten her and say that if she will not live with him, no one else will," he said. "Apart from the conviction for bigamy, he has not previously been in trouble."

Mr. G. Kent, who appeared for Kelly, said, it was understandable that he should want to see the child, although he had no legal rights in the matter whatever. * He had instituted proceedings for divorce, and when this was completed wished to marry the woman concerned, if she were willing. In the meantime he had given an undertaking not to go near the place again, and counsel suggested that the offence might be met by convicting him and ordering him to come up for sentence if called upon
