THREE MONTHS' GAOL

Pleading guilty to the theft of £2 17s Id, the property of Alma Rachel Wilkie, Harvey Ashworth, 27, was sentenced to three months' hard labour by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magis--trate's Court today. Detective-Sergeant E. H. Compton said that Ashworth had found the complainant's door open in the boarding-house where he stayed and removed the money from her handbag. When questioned he admitted the offence and explained that he needed the money to pay his rent. He had several previous convictions.
