CHESS ASSOCIATION

CHAMPIONSHIP ENTRIES

There was a large attendance of delegates last Saturday at the quarterly council meeting of the New Zealand Chess Association. Mr. A, y T. Craven, the local vice-president, occupied the chair. The statement of Mr. H. P. Yarrell, honorary, treasurer, showed that the finances are in a sound condition. A letter was received from the Wanganui Chess Club outlining a plan for holding the annual congress in the North and the South Island alternately. It was decided that it 'is not practicable at the present time to fix "a definite eight-year congress programme on the desired lines, but the suggestion will be fully explored when circumstances permit. The Onehunga Chess Club was admitted to membership. The position of some clubs that have gone into recess is to be looked into at the next quarterly meeting. The following 12 entries have been received for the fifty-second New Zealand championship tourney, to commence in Auckland on Boxing Day:— A. L. Fletcher, J. Adkins, C. P. Belton, Sergeant Richards, F. G. McSherry, and J..A. Moir (all of Auckland), W. Reindler • (Wanganui), M. Stewart (Canterbury.C.C.), R. G. Wade (present champion), and Dr. E. Meyer (Wellington CO, T. Lepviikmann and F. K. Kelling (Wellington W.M. Club). Mr. Moir's entry is subject to his getting leave of absence. Dr. E. Meyer will be the first of her sex to make a bid for the New Zealand title. Entries for the major open tourney close on December 15. They will be dealt with on the following day/ by the selection board (Messrs. Severne, Gyles, and Hardy) and Messrs. Craven and Kellmg. So far a dozen names have been handed in for this event, of which one is withdrawable.

Mr. Wade has given notice to move —"(1) That major open*entries should close on December 1 in future, and (2) that np delegate may cast a vote on any motion involving additions, subtractions, or amendments of the rules of the association unless specifically instructed to do so by an affiliated club on its behalf." Mr. Wade also suggests that a more attractive title than "minor tourney" should be adopted for the competition that ranks next to the major open tourney.
