FORT BRIANT BATTLE

FANATICAL OPPOSITION

Rec. 11.10 a.m,

LONDON, October 5.

American infantry have penetrated into the subterranean tunnel at Fort Briant, reports Reuters correspondent with the American Third Army. They gained some ground despite fanatical opposition and shelling from, other forts.

American troops tonight are clinging to their foothold within the shadow of two gigantic casemates at the'southwest corner-of Fort Briant, after repulsing a German counter-attack which surged across the top of the fort, says the British United Press correspondent. There is no fighting in the main subterranean passages, which the Germans still securely hold behind thick steel doors.

The^hird day of the battle ended with the Americans holding about onetenth of- the area enclosed by the fortress walls. .
