DIFFERENT SCALES
Sir, —Why are technical, primary; and secondary teachers paid on different salary scales? The work of each is surely equally important, so that efficiency, responsibility, working \ conditions, and years of service should ' in general be the only factors in determining what the teacher should be paid. At present a primary teacher of equal teaching ability, academic quali- • fications, service, and responsibility, ■ can receive, much less than a second- • ary teacher. Conversely, a very young primary teacher (gerierally taking a 1 war appointment) can possibly earn ■ more than his equal in the secondary : service. Let us be exacting in the selection of teachers, pay them well, 1 and do away with sectional differences. . I trust that the Committee going into ; the salary question of one service will I evolve a national scheme for all teachers. —I am, etc., - UNION.
