TRAIN SERVICES

BITUMINOUS COAL SHORTAGE

Some of the trains which had been suspended in the North Island owing to shortage of, coal have been reinstated, but the Minister of Railways (Mr. Semple) informed the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon, in reply to a request for further improvement, that the difficulty at the moment was the supply of bituminous coal to the North Island.

More of this class of coal had to be used in the summer instead of lignite, "otherwise," he said, "we would burn the whole neighbourhood down."

The bar trouble at West Coast coal shipping ports had restricted the supply of bituminous coal to the North Island, but that position had improved, and if the improvement continued the Railways Department hoped to get some more bituminous coal. At that point the question of more trains being reinstated could be reviewed.
