FIRE IN INVERCARGILL

P.A. INVERGARGILL, October 2. . The biggest fire that has been seen in Invercargill for niany years raged for over an hour in Tay Street tonight. The top floor of J. E. Watson and. Company's three-storied building was completely burnt out and the ceiling above the first floor, occupied by P. Ha'yman and CQmpany, was severely damaged. None of Mr. Hayman's stock was burnt, but the bulk of it was either ruined or severely damaged by water. The top floor was a mass of flames when the brigade arrived, but with 'its full resources in action it succeeded,in confining the flames to that floor. Here there were seeds and other produce, skins, some wool, and stored furniture., The fire was at its height just as the ! theatres were emptying after 10 o'- ( clock' and it was watched by a big crowd. . jp
