1200 AMERICAN BOMBERS

LONDON, Octber 2. Some 1200 American heavy bombers from Britain flew over Germany today ..to attack an ordnance depot, a tank-factory, arid other war. plants at Kassel,'a railway'yard at Hamm, and targets in the Cologne area. They were escorted by 750 fighters. A few German fighters were sighted, but there were no combats.

Twelve American bombers and seven fighters are missing, but some are believed to have-landed in friendly territory. Last night's main R.A.F. attack was on Brunswick.

General Arnold, commander of the U.S. air forces, said in Washington today that a million tons of bombs had now been dropped by his men on the Axis.

Rec. 12.30 p.m. RUGBY, October 2. Flying Fortresses in very great strength today attacked'targets in the Cologne and Kassel districts. The bombing was mostly done by instruments, through cloud, and the results were not observed,

Thunderbolts attacked railway and factory targets near Siegen and Bonn, and escorted Marauders raided enemy installations near Aachen.

Switching from Calais, R.A.F. rocket Typhoons have turned their attention to Dunkirk and arc-success-fully attacking the Germans in concrete dug-outs and fortified positions. Despite bad weather yesterday, attacks were made on key railway lines and river traffic in Holland. . Two, trains were shot up and 19 barges were destroyed or damaged.
